The University Co-op Presents the Cohen New Works Festival: Poof!! In Movement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 21st, 2009

Sponsored by The University Co-op Presents the Cohen New Works Festival, Poof!! In Movement offers a distinctive new look at dance.

Poof!! In Movement is a colorful performance piece using a combination of dancers and inanimate soft sculptural objects. With the help of three dancers and fanciful choreography, fabric sculpture pieces will come to life.

Choreographer Janna Rock is a BFA dance student in her 3rd year of study at the University of Texas. Ms. Rock’s choreography has been seen in shows by Cambiare Productions, Dance Action, STEEL Dance Company, and L’art Dance Project dance studio. Her performance credits include Andee Scott’s Portrait in the 2007 New Works Festival, Cambiare Production’s {Transformations}, UT’s Dance Repertory Theatre 2008 Fall Showing, Dance Action’s SEED showings, and several formal and informal festivals and events with STEEL Dance Company.

Poof!! In Movement stars three remarkable dancers: MirĂ³ Cassetta, Emily Mitchell, and Emily Bolt. Ms. Cassetta is a French and Italian major at the University of Texas and danced throughout high school in the Emma Willard Dance Company. Ms. Mitchell received her BFA from the University of North Carolina with a concentration in drawing and moved to Austin after graduation. Ms. Bolt is a creative writing senior, instructor at the Dougherty Arts center, and Daily Texan columnist.

Costumes, props, and creative direction by Lindsey Bailey. Ms. Bailey received her BFA in studio art from the University of Texas. She currently teaches art at San Juan Diego Catholic High School and the Dougherty Arts School. Her artwork can be viewed at www.cakecrush.com. Poof!! In Movement came about as an opportunity to expand the definition of installation and creative vision through performance. This performance is the final project in a series of Poof!! installation pieces created by Ms. Bailey.

This performance will take place in racquetball court #1 in Gregory Gym. Gregory Gym is located on the corner of Speedway and East 21st street on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

About the project . . .

The idea behind Poof!! In Movement is to create a colorful performance piece using a combination of dancers and inanimate soft sculptural objects. Creating whimsical characters out of fabric, I will collaborate with a variety of undergraduate junior & senior students to combine performance, costume, and installation. With the help of the dancers, the fabric sculpture pieces will perform a dance sequence, moving in and out of space. The dancers will be disguised as part of the pieces, via costuming. Poof!! In Movement will evoke humor and whimsy through a unique process and collaboration of media.

About the conceptual director . . .

Lindsey Bailey holds a degree in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin.

Lindsey pushes the traditional boundaries of sculpture, incorporating mixed media to create installation art. As a teacher of art classes for kids and adults, many of Lindsey's works are influenced by how children react to the world—with an unselfconscious, happy-go-lucky, safe and imaginative wonder.

Lindsey is a native Texan who moved back to Austin a few years ago. She has served on the board for the Visual Arts Alliance of Nashville, Tennessee and her work has been featured on Nashville Public Radio and HGTV. Lindsey currently teaches art at San Juan Diego Catholic High School. Her artwork can be viewed at www.cakecrush.com.

Poof!! In Movement came about as an opportunity to expand the definition of installation and creative vision through performance.
